This course will examine three examples of English fantastic literature from different periods: a 19th-century Gothic novella (Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, by R.L. Stevenson), a 20th-century SF novel (Man Plus, by Frederik Pohl) and a 21st-century Fantasy novel (The Prisoner of Azkaban, by J.K. Rowling). The aim is to compare fantastic writing from different periods in English literature to see the different ways in which Gothic, Science Fiction and Fantasy texts use fantastic elements for real-world critique and to focus on how the texts present “monstrosity”.
