This course will look at a range of English poetry and art from the nineteenth-century in order to examine how they represent the great themes in this period of English history: the Industrial Revolution, "the Woman Question", Evolution and "the Death of God", the British Empire and Urbanization.
Aims
To develop an understanding of issues in nineteenth-century England through their representation in word and image.
To develop an understanding of the ways in which the content and form of representation was mediated by nineteenth century views on the purpose of art.
Only students who demonstrate at least a basic knowledge of literature and techniques for literary study can be accepted on this course.
