The course will study three twentieth century British Fantasy novels: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (C.S. Lewis, 1950), A Wizard of Earthsea (Ursula K La Guin, 1968) and Howl's Moving Castle (Diana Wynne Jones, 1986).
The goals are:
To focus on how the novels represent such themes as childhood development, good and evil and heroism.
To consider how each novel is a "Fantasy" text and the implications of representing thematic choices in this genre.
To read the texts philosophically by considering them as "a world without place".
Only students who demonstrate at least a basic knowledge of literature and techniques for literary study can be accepted on the course.
